01/06/26 Axel Schuette
For over four decades, Axel Schuette has been recognised as one of the leading names in the world of historic automobiles. What began as a modest initiative has evolved into a discreet, yet highly influential player at the top end of the international market. In Belgium, Filip Baert has been a partner of the renowned German company for several years, contributing with passion and precision to this refined story.
“I’ve been fascinated by mechanics and anything on four wheels from a very young age,” Filip Baert explains. “As a child, I was captivated by tractors, trucks and later by classic cars. That passion never left me. Although my professional career initially developed in a completely different field, I eventually found my way back to what I consider art on four wheels. The paths of Axel Schuette and myself had already crossed earlier, when I began expanding my own collection. After several conversations, I became a partner in the company. Today, I operate globally and serve as the exclusive partner for Belgium.”
The company Axel Schuette has become a benchmark in the world of classic cars and was founded in the mid 1980s. “It all started with a 21 year old in a garage with a telefax,” Baert continues. “But professionalism increased rapidly. What began with acquiring and reselling restoration projects from the United States, primarily Mercedes Benz, developed into a strong company specialising in guiding clients in the acquisition of vehicles and the management of collections. For restorations, we collaborate with exceptionally strong partners, yet we never let go of the client at any stage of the process. Demanding car enthusiasts worldwide rely on our expertise when buying or selling iconic cars, allowing us to enrich collections at the highest level. What connects us with our clients is a shared passion for exceptional automobiles, supported by relationships built over the years on trust. We represent their interests with passion, expertise and the utmost discretion. This involves vehicles from the interwar period, cars from the 1950s and 1960s, and more recent supercars such as the Ferrari F40 and the Bugatti Veyron. However, we only operate within an environment we fully master, and we do not engage with vehicles we are not familiar with.”
Beyond his professional calling, Filip Baert remains a true enthusiast of the classic car scene.
“That is extremely important to me, and perhaps even essential to my work. I remain, above all, a passionate enthusiast, and I am fortunate to own a collection of remarkable cars, allowing me to continue participating in exceptional events. In recent years, these have included the Tour de France Auto, the Mille Miglia and the Modena Cento Ore, an event that takes in several legendary circuits across Italy. I have also been able to expand my collection with a car I truly fell in love with, the Jaguar D-Type, a Short Nose without fin, a true work of art you can admire for hours, and one that delivers an almost transcendent driving experience. At the time, racing in the mid 1950s, it was one of the strongest race cars of its era, with victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1955, 1956 and 1957. My example comes from the American racing scene, with races at Lime Rock and Watkins Glen. Driving it is an art form, especially when experienced as the car demands, as a pure racing machine. It remains my dream to one day participate in the Le Mans Classic, and dreams are meant to be fulfilled. Moreover, my participation in such events forms a perfect bridge to my professional life, because ultimately what we do requires a strong relationship of trust with our clients, and that bond is more easily built within a shared environment of passion.”
